Watarrka Waterhole Wildlife is a non-commercial project that livestreams a waterhole in Watarrka National Park, Northern Territory, Australia, and publishes a timeline of wildlife detections at watarrka.stream. It is operated by an individual, not a company.
The Google data this application uses
The application authenticates to a single YouTube channel — the operator's own
— using the youtube.force-ssl scope. It has no other users, and
no facility for anyone else to sign in.
That access is used for exactly two automated tasks:
- Rotating the live broadcast. Twice daily it ends the current broadcast and creates the next one, so that no broadcast exceeds the length YouTube will archive, and so a dropped connection cannot leave the encoder streaming into a finished broadcast.
- Updating video descriptions. It writes a list of timestamped wildlife sightings into the description of the broadcast they occurred in.
It reads the id, title, status and start time of the channel's own broadcasts in order to do this. It does not read, collect or store viewer information, comments, subscriber lists, analytics, or any data belonging to other Google accounts — the scope grants no access to them.
Limited use
The application's use of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. Google user data is not sold, transferred, or used for advertising, and is not used to train any generalised model. It is used only to provide the two features described above.
Credentials and retention
The OAuth refresh token is stored in two places: an environment file readable only by the operator on the project's own server, and as an encrypted secret in the Cloudflare Worker that serves this site. No Google credential is written to source control, and none is shared with any third party. Access can be revoked at any time from the channel's Google account permissions page, which immediately and permanently ends the application's access.
Information about visitors to this site
The site has no accounts, no sign-in, no advertising, no analytics, and sets no tracking cookies. Nothing you do here is associated with you.
Two service providers necessarily process requests: Cloudflare, which serves the site and retains standard request logs including IP addresses for a short period for security and abuse prevention, and Sentry, which receives diagnostic reports when the site errors. Neither is used to profile visitors.
The site publishes still images and short video clips recorded by a fixed camera pointed at a waterhole. The camera is motion-triggered and its subject is wildlife, but it may incidentally record people who pass in front of it. If an image of you has been published here and you want it removed, write to the address below and it will be taken down.
